Choosing the right shoes for your baby is a significant task that every parent must undertake. You may be wondering which type of shoe—hard-soled or soft-soled, is best for your baby's developing feet and how long they should wear them.

To help you make the right choice, we turned to Leah Alexander, a seasoned pediatrician with 23 years of practice, who offers a wealth of knowledge on child development.

Soft-Soled Shoes for Walking Babies

As a rule, soft-soled shoes are a better option for young children who are still learning to walk. As they become confident walkers, they can move on to firmer-soled shoes, but some flexibility may still be beneficial.

Soft-sole shoes are not essential for a baby to learn to walk properly. Studies even suggest that barefoot walking promotes better foot alignment and reduces inward turning. However, there is no harm in using soft-soled shoes. They are preferable over hard-soled shoes, as they offer better traction and grip for the baby, preventing sliding.

Around 10-11 months, when babies are beginning to walk and pull themselves up, soft-sole shoes can be introduced. Before this stage, when they are not yet actively walking or pulling up, shoes are optional. When they start walking, and you take them outside, it's advisable to have them wear soft-soled shoes for foot protection. However, inside the house, being barefoot is perfectly fine.

Transition to Hard-Soled Shoes

Some babies intermittently walk on their toes during the early stages of walking. Wearing hard-soled shoes can discourage this behaviour and promote flat-footed walking. If you notice your baby frequently on their toes while cruising around 10 or 11 months, providing shoes can help them develop proper balance, coordination, and an upright posture.

Finding the Right Shoe Balance for Your Baby

Ensuring the optimal duration for soft-soled shoes is crucial for your baby's foot development. While barefoot walking offers benefits, soft-sole shoes can provide traction and protection. As your baby progresses in walking and cruising, introducing soft-soled shoes is recommended. Be attentive to your baby's needs and consult a pediatric podiatrist for personalized guidance on transitioning to hard-soled shoes. Prioritizing your baby's comfort and foot health will support their journey towards confident and steady steps.
