Are Velcro shoes less likely to cause tripping and accidents than shoes with laces?
Asked 2 years ago
My child is very accident-prone, they are always tripping over. They are around the typical age that would normally be switching to laces however I am concerned this will provide another source of accidents. Is this a valid concern?

Velcro shoes may be a better option while your child is younger because they encourage your child to be able to fasten and unfasten their shoes themselves, which builds independence. It is important to move onto laced shoes by about the age of 4 or 5, as the majority of footwear available from this age uses laces. Regardless of whether using Velcro or laces, the most important thing which will reduce accidents is that the footwear fits correctly and is securely fastened. If using laces, make sure that the laces are tied so that they do not fall below the bottom of the shoe, and trips should be avoided.
