At What Age Will My Baby's Feet Straighten Out?
Discover how babies' feet develop over time, when they typically straighten out, and the importance of choosing the right footwear to support healthy growth.
Updated August 14, 2023.
Children's feet undergo various changes as they grow. Their bones, muscles, and ligaments are still developing, so it's normal for their feet to look and function differently from adult feet. These changes are often a typical part of a child's growth and do not require intervention.
Newborns' feet, primarily composed of cartilage and soft tissues, are flexible and soft. The confined space of the uterus can cause their feet to turn inward or curl up. Most children will develop a natural arch in their feet between 6 and 12 months, and their feet will straighten out. However, it is normal for them to have some degree of flat feet or inward foot rotation until they are about 2-3 years old.
Developmental Stages of a Baby’s Feet
Babies' feet undergo several developmental stages:
- 6-10 months: Their feet experience significant changes in shape as they grow. Most babies will develop a natural arch as bones, ligaments, and tendons in the feet develop over time. Their feet also widen. At 8-10 months, their feet become stronger and more toned as they start standing independently.
- 9-18 months: As infants gain experience walking and crawling, their balance and coordination improve, resulting in a more natural walk and stronger, steadier steps. Most babies will have fully developed arches by 18 months. They begin taking independent steps, initially tip-toeing or walking bow-legged.
Stepping into Healthy Foot Development
We've discussed the transformation of babies' feet during their early years, but it's also important to note that their shoes can impact their feet's development. It is crucial to choose lightweight, flexible shoes with enough room for growth. Ideally, babies should wear soft-soled shoes during their early years to support normal foot development.
